Bitter Wheat Information

David Mamet tackles Hollywood's biggest scandals in his own unique way as he brings Bitter Wheat to the Garrick Theatre this summer, starring John Malkovich in his first West End theatre appearance in almost 30 years.

Directed by Mamet, Bitter Wheat centres on Barney Fein, the head of a major Hollywood studio who falls from power to shame. It comes after Mamet last year revealed that he had written a play about the Harvey Weinstein scandal in Hollywood, which saw the mogul accused of sexual abuse by over 80 women, and sparked the #MeToo movement.

Bitter Wheat, starring John Malkovich will run at the Garrick Theatre from 7th June to 14th September with tickets on sale now.

John Malkovich will make his first London stage appearance in almost 30 years in Bitter Wheat. Malkovich is known for his screen appearances in films such as Places in the Heart, In the Line of Fire, Con Air, Johnny English and Being John Malkovich. In 2016, he directed an English language production of the play Good Canary at the Rose Theatre Kingston, for which he won the Evening Standard Award for best director.

David Mamet is a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer whose previous plays include Glengarry Glen Ross, Speed-the-Plow, American Buffalo, Race and The Penitent. In 1994, his play Oleanna told of a university professor who was accused of sexual misconduct by a pupil. It premiered in London at the Royal Court in 1993 directed by Harold Pinter and starring Lia Williams and David Suchet.

Bitter Wheat is at the Garrick Theatre from 7th June.

Our review

Bitter Wheat

From the moment David Mamet's Bitter Wheat, a thinly-disguised portrayal of a Harvey Weinstein-like film producer's fall from grace was first announced as heading to the London stage earlier this year, it aroused controversy and hostility in equal measure. Some prominent critics and commentators took it to task, sight unseen, for offering a male perspective of the #MeToo story that was properly the territory, they said, of female writers only. Perhaps they should have bided their time. The...
