Evita Information
Evita is cancelled at the Barbican.
Evita tells the powerful story of Eva Peron, the first lady of Argentina, and chronicles her life from her rise to power with husband, Argentine President Juan Peron, her philanthropy, and her death. It features some of Lloyd Webber and Rice's best-known musical numbers such as "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Oh What A Circus" and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall".
Samantha Pauly led the cast of Evita when it opened at the Open Air Theatre, alongside Trent Saunders, Ektor Riviera and Adam Pearce. Casting for the transfer to the Barbican is yet to be announced.
This new production of Evita was given a contemporary spin by director Jamie Lloyd. whose previous works include Betrayal have been seen in the West End and on Broadway, when it opened at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre. Our review of the musical noted that Lloyd's visionary production has plenty of confetti cannons and pyrotechnics, and that "iconic pose, etched in musical theatre history forever, with the Evita purists in attendance finally get a glimpse of what they came for."
It is a musical that has been performed across the world, with different productions regularly touring across the UK. It was adapted for the big screen in 1996 when Madonna took on the titular role alongside Antonio Banderas in a film directed by Alan Parker.
