Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical Information

A bold new musical honours the Jamaican reggae superstar Bob Marley, whose indelible songs and rebellious spirit continue to inspire millions around the world. Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical tickets are available on Lonson Theatre now.

Bob Marley's life story is an extraordinary one, and Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical provides both drama and celebratory stories in one. The artist began playing at a young age, inspired by a combination of Jamaican ska music and the R&B that he heard on US radio stations. With his group the Wailers, he became a reggae pioneer — and then a global star when Eric Clapton covered "I Shot the Sheriff," reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. That was followed by the huge success of "No Woman, No Cry."

However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for Marley. He survived an attempt on his life, which led to him leaving Jamaica — although he later returned to perform at a concert attempting to broker political peace. His hit single "One Love" exemplifies that ethos, and will also feature in Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical London production. Marley tragically died of cancer in 1981, departing with the wise words "Money can't buy life."

Clint Dyer, deputy artistic director of the National Theatre, directs this exciting new show, which has a book by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, Rocketman) and is led by Arinzé Kene as Bob Marley. Kene was Olivier Award nominated for his play Misty and his performance in Death of a Salesman, and played another iconic musician, Sam Cooke, in the play One Night in Miami.

The Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical West End production has the blessing of Marley's family — and full access to his incomparable back catalogue.

How to demystify the icon that is Bob Marley, to separate the man from the mantles placed upon him: reggae superstar, Black hero, poetic advocate of peace and love, ganja-smoking Rasta inspiration, or cool dude splashed across T-shirts and posters in student halls? It's a struggle that this intermittently powerful new show both tackles head on and embodies in its own flawed form.Lee Hall's book is at its weakest when it follows the jukebox bio-musical model, racing breathlessly through Marley's...
