Four Quartets Information

In an extraordinary solo performance, the great actor Ralph Fiennes gives a dramatic rendition of T.S. Eliot’s poem Four Quartets. The production, which began in Bath and toured the UK, is now coming to the Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End. Don’t miss out on this tour-de-force turn from one of our leading actors. Four Quartets tickets are available on London Theatre now.

The legendary modernist poet T. S. Eliot wrote his masterwork, these four loosely connected poems, over six years in the early 1940s. Entitled Burnt Norton, East Coker, The Dry Salvages and Little Gidding respectively, the verses offer a meditation on big ideas like the meaning of time, our understanding of the divine, faith and enlightenment, and how our society and our nation might emerge from the Second World War. The war became increasingly influential on the work, reflecting Eliot’s own experience as a watchman during the Blitz.

In the Four Quartets play, which Fiennes both stars in and directs, the actor delivers Eliot’s poem, from memory, over a riveting 75 minutes. This is a labour of love for Fiennes, who used to listen to the work on an LP record with his mother, and who recorded it as an audiobook in 2009. He felt it chimed with our pandemic year, as we began to ask big questions about life and time, and look for meaning in the midst of confusion and fear.

Fiennes, who was one of the first to return to our stages with his performance of David Hare’s Beat the Devil at the Bridge Theatre, mounted a national tour of this show earlier in the year, beginning at Theatre Royal Bath. Now, we have the pleasure of a Four Quartets West End production.

The Four Quartets London run will benefit from design by Hildegard Bechtler, lighting design by Tim Lutkin, sound design by Christopher Shutt, and creative production from James Dacre. But the out-and-out star here is Ralph Fiennes, who will give just 36 towering and unmissable performances in the West End. Tickets to Four Quartets are available now. Our review

TS Eliot's dense, sprawling, four-poem cycle exploring time, faith, mortality, history, love, and everything in between doesn't exactly scream commercial theatre. And yet, thanks to a simply phenomenal performance by Ralph Fiennes, this passion project - which he toured earlier in the year - becomes an unlikely new West End gem. In an Eliot-worthy paradox, it's both challenging and serene, a whirlwind of ideas yet giving us the profundity of space, of silence.Written between 1935 and 1941, the...
