Emilia Clarke makes her West End debut as Nina in Anton Chekhov's play The Seagull, newly adapted by Anya Reiss. After initial performances were put on pause at the Playhouse Theatre in March 2020, The Seagull now returns in summer 2022 at the Harold Pinter Theatre. The Seagull tickets are available on London Theatre now.
The Seagull play examines the personal and professional relationships of two writers and two actors. While individuals work hard to achieve fame to make their dreams a reality, it comes at a human cost. The Seagull was originally written in Russian by Anton Chekhov, but The Seagull London play is a new adaptation by Anya Reiss. Reiss’ adaptation was first seen at Southwark Playhouse in 2012, starring Lily James.
Emilia Clarke will play Nina in The Seagull. The award-winning actress is best known for playing Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, but has also starred in films such as Me Before You and Last Christmas. Clarke made her stage debut in Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Broadway in 2013.
Jamie Lloyd directs The Seagull at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Originally, The Seagull was scheduled as one of three plays in a Jamie Lloyd season at the Playhouse Theatre, completed by Cyrano de Bergerac and A Doll’s House. Cyrano de Bergerac returns to the West End in 2022, starring James McAvoy. Details on A Doll’s House are to be announced.
The Seagull is often revived in London. In recent years, The Seagull has been staged at the Lyric Hammersmith, and by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Gillian Lynne Theatre. But with Anya Reiss’ new twists to The Seagull, Chekhov is given a 21st-century update.
