The Corn is Green Information

Nicola Walker stars in a new production of The Corn is Green at the National Theatre. Dominic Cooke directs the Welsh drama, which is receiving its first London revival in 35 years. The Corn is Green tickets will be available on London Theatre soon.

The Corn is Green play centres on Lily Moffat, an English school teacher who is sent to north Wales to educate young miners living in the area. While teaching the locals, Lily is met by angry communities and a growing resistance to her ways. One teenager, Morgan Evans, decides to seek a way out through education, making Lily’s existence worthwhile.

Emlyn Williams’ The Corn is Green is a semi-autobiographical play, inspired by his early childhood in Mostyn, Flintshire, to pen the play. He felt such an affection towards his own work that he even played Morgan Evans — a role he based upon himself — in The Corn is Green London premiere, which took place at the Duchess Theatre in 1938. Even though the play is set in Wales, a major Welsh revival of The Corn is Green has never been staged.

The last The Corn is Green London revival was at the Old Vic in 1985. So this production is sure to breathe new life into the 20th-century drama. The Olivier Award-winning actress Nicola Walker will play Miss Moffat, joined by Gareth David-Lloyd. The Corn is Green continues a new National Theatre tradition of showcasing Welsh dramas. Under Milk Wood, starring Michael Sheen, played at the National in 2021.

Tickets to The Corn is Green will be available soon.
