The Oklahoma! musical is based on Lynn Riggs’ 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs. Oklahoma! is set in 1906, and the action takes place on the farm country of what would become the Oklahoma state. Farm girl Laurey Williams is the subject of affections across the territory. Notably, two men vie for her hand in marriage: a cowboy called Curly and a farmhand called Jud. Throughout the musical, the farmers and the cowboys must learn to live alongside one another and deal with their differences. But by the end of the musical, they’re all living in one state — Oklahoma!
Oklahoma! premiered in 1943 and the show is said to have transformed musical theatre forever. The Oklahoma! musical developed the "book musical" style — a musical in which the story is told through acting, song, and dance. The West End premiere of Oklahoma! was in 1947. However, 75 years later, the 2022 Oklahoma! London production will feature a new take on the story, complete with chilli, cornbread, and in-the-round staging.
Oklahoma! is the first musical with music by legendary songwriting duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. The musical features songs such as “Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’”, “People Will Say We’re in Love” and “The Farmer and the Cowman”.
