The Kite Runner Information
This emotional and powerful stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s internationally best-selling novel comes to the West End following two highly successful regional runs and a brief UK tour. The award-winning tale of friendship, betrayal and redemption has left audiences weeping in the aisles at the beauty of the story telling and richness of the narrative that spans cultures and continents as it follows one man's attempt to confront his past and find redemption.
Having previously delighted audiences at the Wyndham's Theatre where it received nightly standing ovations and was seen by over 60,000 people, the production has announced it will transfer to the Playhouse Theatre for an eight week season from 8 June.
Adapted for the stage by Matthew Spangler and directed by Giles Croft, The Kite Runner is based on the original 2003 novel that has become a bestselling book around the world, published in over 70 countries selling over 31.5 million copies in 60 different languages. Set in Afghanistan, a divided country on the verge of war, it shows two childhood friends who find themselves about to be torn apart.
BBC's Casualty star Ben Turner takes on the lead role of Amir having previously played the role in Nottingham and around the country. Commenting on the scope and ambition of the play, he described it as an "origins story, something that no matter where you're from, the colour of your skin or your background, there's something in it that everyone can relate to. And it's Shakespearian in that respect, it's betrayal, forgiveness, redemption, it's guilt, and I think that is something that's universal."
A popular text for school students, The Kite Runner is set to be a fresh addition to the West End as it transfers to the Playhouse Theatre following a successful run at the Wyndham’s Theatre earlier this year.
Afghanistan is a divided country on the verge of war and two childhood friends are about to be torn apart. It’s a beautiful afternoon in Kabul and the skies are full of the excitement and joy of a kite flying tournament. But neither Hassan or Amir can foresee the terrible incident which will shatter their lives forever.
