Long Day's Journey Into Night Information

Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Long Day's Journey Into Night is set over one summer's night and tells the story of the Tryone family in a seaside town in  Connecticut. The family consists of father James, mother Mary and sons Jamie and Edmund as they deal with family problems such as their pasts and illness. O'Neill's play is semi-autobiographical; he wished to tell the story of his family background and what his life was like growing up. It was written as an anniversary present to his wife, and published posthumously in 1956.

O'Neill's play premiered in Sweden, where his works proved very popular. In November 1956, the play opened on Broadway at the Helen Hayes Theatre starring Fredric March, Florence Eldridge and Jason Robards, Jr. It won the Tony Award for Best Play, New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play and saw O'Neill awarded the  Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the fourth time.

A new production premiered at the Bristol Old Vic in 2016, and was directed by Richard Eyre starring Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville. It will run at the Wyndham's in January 2018.

Jeremy Irons is a Tony Award-winning actor who is probably best-known for his film roles in Danny the Champion of the World, Reversal of Fortune and he also voiced Scar in the Disney film The Lion King. On stage, Irons has had great success in the West End performing with the RSC and at the National, and won the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play after appearing in The Real Thing opposite Glenn Close.

Lesley Manville won the 2014 Olivier Award for Best Actress after appearing in the revival of Ghosts at the Almeida. She was nominated for the award for her role in Mike Leigh's play Grief at the National Theatre in 2012. Her film roles include Mary in Another Year, for which she was nominated for a BAFTA, and Penny in the 2002 film All or Nothing.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night is set on one August day in 1912 and follows the Tyrone family in a Connecticut seaside town. Father James is a seasoned actor who toured for years on the basis of playing a single role. His wife, Mary, is suffering from addiction to morphine. Their sons Jamie and Edmund have their own problems which unravel as the course of the day goes on.
