Battersea Arts Centre

Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) opened on 15 Nov. 1983, serving a community living close to Clapham Junction. During the late nineteenth century, BAC was at the heart of all social life in the local area, so much so that an organ was installed by Robert Hope Jones. Throughout its history, BAC isn't just a theatre; it's been used for political good. Christabel and Emmeline Pankhurst and other suffragettes used the building to debate laws. World-renowned artists have played at BAC too, including Fleetwood Mac, Sam Shepard, The Jam and Allen Ginsberg. 

The Arts Centre aspect opened in the 1970s, saved by the community when public spending threatened the closure. In the early 2000s, Jerry Springer the Opera premiered at BAC, later transferring to the National Theatre and winning four Olivier Awards.

In 2015, 80 firefighters saved the building from destruction. The Grand Hall reopened in 2018 with a Phoenix Season, celebrating the community and its diversity.
