The Peacock Theatre opened in 1960 in the West End, close to the Aldwych Theatre and Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Originally named the Royalty Theatre, early productions typically tended to be London plays. This only lasted for a year, as the theatre was repurposed into a cinema, screening movies including My Fair Lady.

The Peacock Theatre has been used as a television studio. From 1980 - 1986, the Peacock was home to This Is Your Life, an autobiographical television series that delved into the lives of British stars. A new lease of life was breathed into the Peacock Theatre in the 1990s, thanks to Sadler’s Wells. Building their new theatre, the Peacock became a subsidiary dance venue for the company. Currently, the theatre is shared between the London School of Economics lectures in the daytime and Sadler’s Wells productions in the evening. The Peacock really is the Jekyll & Hyde of London theatres.
