Playhouse Theatre

Address:
Northumberland Avenue, London, WC2N 5DE
Capacity:
786

The Playhouse Theatre opened in 1882, but was originally called the Royal Avenue Theatre. After 23 years of production, the theatre was closed for refurbishment. Sadly, renovation works killed six people as the roof of Charing Cross railway station collapsed during the refurbishment.

The Playhouse Theatre then reopened in 1907 with the name we use today. Early shows include plays by George Bernard Shaw, as well as performances from the Almeida Theatre. More recently, the Playhouse has been home to West End revivals including An Inspector Calls, 1984 and La Cage Aux Folles.

After a world premiere at the Young Vic, The Jungle transferred to the Playhouse Theatre in 2018. To stage the production, the auditorium was redesigned to allow for audiences to sit on multiple sides of the stage. The Playhouse Theatre is renowned for its celebrity-filled productions too, with recent shows starring James McAvoy and Lindsay Lohan.
