The Grease musical follows the Burger Palace Boys and the Pink Ladies as they navigate the trials and tribulations of their senior year at Rydell High. Transfer student Sandy Dumbrowski speaks of her whirlwind summer romance with heartthrob Danny Zuko. Little does Sandy know that Danny’s also at Rydell High. Sparks fly as they reunite, but can they find true love by the lockers?
In Grease, you can join the Pink Ladies at their fun-filled sleepovers, see the kids of Rydell High dance it out at the high school hop, and be a part of this love letter to high school. These teens really do go together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong.
While millions have seen the Grease film, did you know Grease was originally a musical? Grease on Broadway opened in 1971, and then the Grease London premiere came two years later. The Grease West End premiere opened at the New London Theatre (now named Gillian Lynne Theatre), with Richard Gere as Danny Zuko. Since then, Grease has been revived five times in the West End, and has been on numerous national tours.
Even if you’ve never seen Grease on stage before, you’ll know the songs if you’ve watched the 1978 film starring John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John and Stockard Channing. The Grease music, lyrics and storyline are by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, and songs include “Beauty School Dropout,” “Greased Lightnin’” and “Summer Nights.”
This Grease production will offer a slightly different take though, now featuring a grittier, tougher exterior. It’s led by direction from White Christmas’ Nikolai Foster and choreography by Arlene Phillips. Make sure you’re hopelessly devoted to West End theatre and see Grease in London.
