Moulin Rouge! The Musical Information

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, based on the Academy Award-winning Baz Luhrmann film of the same name is at the Piccadilly Theatre. Moulin Rouge! The Musical tickets are available on London Theatre now.

Set in the Montmartre Quarter in Paris, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a luxurious, indulgent musical. As a lovesick writer named Christian takes his seat inside the Moulin Rouge, he's greeted by Satine. With a dazzling smile and an inviting manner, their lives collide in epic fashion as they grow closer together in an extravagant world where anything goes.

Meet many characters including the host of the Moulin Rouge, Harold Zidler; the brilliant and starving artist Toulouse-Lautrec; the greatest tango dancer - and gigolo - in all of Paris, Santiago; the tempting Nini; and The Duke of Monroth, the wealthy and entitled patron of the club who thinks he can buy anything he wants, including love.

Following its run on Broadway, which unveiled the jukebox musical's eclectic pop score with songs by the likes of Madonna, Lady Gaga, Elton John and more, excitement quickly built around the West End production of the Moulin Rouge! Musical. From the films iconic classics like Elton John's "Your Song" and Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy", it also fuses contemporary classics in the famous "Elephant Love Medley", which seamlessly incorporates over 20 songs by the likes of The Beatles, U2, Elvis, Dolly Parton, Queen and more into a single euphoric moment of theatre.

Luhrmann's original film premiered in 2001, and starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in the roles of Satine and Christian respectively. The third film in the filmmaker's 'Red Curtain' trilogy, which also included Strictly Ballroom and Romeo & Juliet. The Moulin Rouge! Film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, and was the first musical in 10 years to receive a nomination for Best Picture.

The pre-Broadway world premiere engagement of Moulin Rouge! The Musical wowed audiences in Boston, and then Moulin Rouge! The Musical packed up its bags and headed to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway. Moulin Rouge! The Musical in London is more than a stage show, it’s a state of mind. So get ready to feel your Freedom, Beauty, Truth, and Love!

Our review

The night belongs to the bohemians, as Baz Luhrmann's iconic 2001 film can-cans its way to vibrant life onstage in Alex Timbers's eyegasmic production. There's a new detail — an elephant, a windmill — everywhere you look in the bedazzled Piccadilly Theatre, dripping in red lights, lace, and velvet with Derek McLane's immersive set. Welcome to the Moulin Rouge. This is not your Parisian night club from the early 2000's in the film or from the turn-of-the-century (other century) France where the...

Liisi LaFontaine never thought she would do musical theatre professionally.
